Relay for Life Women Physicians’ Team Was a Great Success!
Women Physicians participated in an enjoyable and
successful 24 hours beginning June 2nd at Cuesta Park hosting a team for the
Mountain View Relay for Life. Relay
As part of our service to the community and to our many patients and loved ones whom we have helped through a diagnosis of cancer, Women Physicians wanted to form a team this year. We recruited our patients, family, staff and doctors to participate and had a fantastic response. So many of us have been touched by cancer!!!
What Were the Highlights? The entire day and night was so rewarding that it is hard to pick out specifics. The whole day was delightful as adults and children listened to the bands, played volleyball, walked their dogs, and had plenty of snacks and water. Some teams set up tents and others had booths. Cuesta Park with its shade trees, grassy knolls and meandering path is a very pleasant venue for this type of event. The ACS provided Togo sandwiches for lunch and a barbecue for dinner.
Certainly, the survivors lap at 10:00 am was a time for grateful reflection. Many survivors were on our team including but not limited to Dr. Sutherland, John Sanguinetti, Kurt Mangold, Darci Hill, Adelaide Nye, and Judy Scott. In the evening, the lighting of the luminaria was a moving event. Hundreds of decorated bags with candles inside were lighted along the path. Each was in support of a survivor or in honor of a cancer victim.
The lighting was followed by a photo slide show of the events of the day and personal statements by some of the participants. Walking in the wee hours of the night to the light of the luminarias was a very peaceful experience. Our team had a special evening treat as we celebrated a birthday with cake and candles for one of our survivors. The final lap was Sunday morning. Many participants returned to wrap up the 24 hour event. Who Were the Walkers? Special thanks goes to Darci
Hill who walked a total of 7 hours! Darci is a healthy and grateful survivor of
ovarian cancer which was discovered by Dr. Litwin in 2004. She was joined in
many laps by her husband and 2 children, now 8 and 10 years old. Darci was also
our number one internet fund raiser. Other walkers, in alphabetical order, included Pat Bernal, Dione, Arun and Mira Chen, Barbara Core, Barbara and Giancarlo Dehn, Briana and Brittany Fedkiw, Bobbie Gentry, Rhiannon Gulden, Neil Hendin, Liz, Scott, and Sarah Lowrie, Terri and Kurt Mangold, Deirdre Murtagh, Adelaide Nye, Thom Riley, Judy and Barry Scott, Jayna Sutherland, IdaRose Sylvester, Hildy Taylor, Dominique and Walter VanHooff, and Natalie and Beverly Wilson.
How about the Fundraising? We are proud to say that we met our goals. Our goal was $5,000. Thanks to the committed fund-raising of our participants as well as generous donations from many of our patients, we raised a total of $8,430.00. We were the top fundraising team for the Mountain View Relay. Go team! This money will be used by the ACS for research, education, advocacy and service. Throughout the country, Relay events such as this now bring in approximately $400 million per year. How About Mountain View as a Community?
At Women Physicians, we plan to sponsor another team next year. We are happy to have participants join our team even if they are not our patients or employees. We encourage community members, businesses, and organizations to consider forming their own teams. The more participation we have, the more fun it is for all of us and the more profitable for the ACS.
