BOTOX® Cosmetic Injections
We are now pleased to offer BOTOX® Cosmetic therapy for facial wrinkles and underarm sweating. Treatment of both of these areas has been FDA approved attesting to the proven efficacy and safety. Following are the answers to commonly asked questions regarding BOTOX® Cosmetic therapy.
What causes wrinkles and frown lines?
Frown lines, forehead lines and crows feet are caused by the constant movement of muscles underneath the skin. For example, a wrinkle in the area between the eyebrows may appear and persist because of the repeated, often unconscious action, of frowning. These lines can produce an angry or frustrated look on the face. This is the same for lines by the eyes, often called crows feet, which are caused by smiling or squinting. Raising our eyebrows often will result in forehead lines.
What is BOTOX® Cosmetic?
BOTOX® Cosmetic is a purified product produced by a bacterium called Clostridium botulinum. This drug works by weakening the muscles that cause wrinkles. Used in its purified form, in tiny amounts, injection of BOTOX® Cosmetic will relax muscles, lessening the appearance of frown lines, forehead lines, and crows feet.
What benefits can I expect?
BOTOX® Cosmetic therapy can decrease the strength of the muscles in which it is injected. By relaxing these muscles, frown lines, forehead lines, and crows feet become less visible. The lines seem to disappear or diminish dramatically. It may take a few days to notice the effect.
How is BOTOX® Cosmetic injected?
BOTOX® Cosmetic is injected into the muscle. Your doctor or provider will determine which muscle to treat to give you the result that you wish to achieve.
Does the injection hurt?
The treatment itself takes only a few minutes and a very tiny needle is all that is needed. Some patients report minor and temporary discomfort from the injection.
How long will it last?
The improvement you will achieve from BOTOX® Cosmetic therapy will last anywhere from 3 - 6 months. You will notice a gradual fading of its effect, at which point, you will have to return for re-injection. Some find that the effects last longer after returning regularly for multiple injections.
When does it start to work?
You will notice BOTOX® Cosmetic therapy beginning to work in 2 - 4 days. The improvement continues over the next 7-10 days.
Where can BOTOX® Cosmetic be used?
The most common areas are frown lines, forehead lines, and crows feet. Other areas include the neck and upper lip. The most recent FDA-approved area is under the arms for treatment of excessive sweating.
What side effects can be expected?
The side effects are related to the injection of the solution. There may be a slight discomfort from the needle and a chance of a small bruise. A rare side effect, is a temporary drooping of one eyelid. This is short lived and very uncommon in the hands of a well trained practitioner.
Are there any reasons not to have BOTOX® Cosmetic?
BOTOX® Cosmetic treatment should not be used on patients who are pregnant, breastfeeding or who have a neurologic disease.
Why is underarm sweating a problem?
Some people experience excessive underarm sweating called hyperhydrosis. This excess can lead to embarrassment and stains on clothing. It causes some people to avoid public speaking and to limit their wardrobes. Many women worry about it during special occasions like weddings, interviews, or travel.
How does BOTOX® Therapy work?
BOTOX® therapy works by blocking the nerves that stimulate the sweat glands under the arms. It can reduce 90% of the sweat produced by these glands. It does not cause muscle weakness when injected under the arms.
How is it injected?
It is injected with a tiny needle just underneath the skin, similar to how a TB test would be injected. Multiple injections are required at spaced intervals to fully cover the whole surface that is responsible for sweating. We locate the active sweat glands with a protocol that uses iodine and cornstarch so expect the procedure to be a little messy. It takes from 30 minutes to an hour.
How long does it last?
Typically, the results take effect within 2 weeks. The treatment will continue to provide underarm dryness for 6 months to 16 months depending on the individual.
What side effects can be expected?
You may feel stinging at the time the injections are administered. Temporary bruising could occur within the next few days.
Are there people who should NOT have these injections?
You should not have a BOTOX® injection if you have a neuromuscular disorder, are pregnant or breastfeeding, or take certain medications such as aminoglycosides or cyclosporine. If you are allergic to iodine, the standard procedure will need to be altered and decreased efficacy is possible.
